Brahmas defeat Wranglers 3-2 in Overtime

Amarillo, TX – The Lone Star Brahmas defeated the Amarillo Wranglers in overtime on Friday night by the final score of 3-2. This was the first game of a two-game home stand for the Wranglers at the Budweiser Bull Pen. 

This game was the seventh meeting of the season between the Wranglers and the Brahmas. The Wranglers starting netminder was Connor McDonough, who in 20 prior appearances posted a record of 11-6-3, with a 2.35 GAA, and a .911 save percentage. The Brahmas started Dievs Rolovs in net, with a record of 13-5-0-1, a 1.6 GAA, and a .923 save percentage on the season entering the matchup.

The first period was scoreless and saw only three penalties committed. The Wranglers were 1/1 on the penalty kill while the other penalties set up a 4 on 4 situation where neither team scored. Shots were 10-6 in favor of Lone Star after 20 minutes of play.

The game opened up in the second period with Colin Doherty notching the game’s first goal on the power play to give Amarillo a 1-0 lead. Doherty’s second goal of the season was scored 2:39 into the second and was assisted by Henry McRoberts and Alex Papaspyropoulos. The Brahmas picked up a power play goal of their own from Justin Kerr 5:34 into the period from Bergeron and James to tie the score up 1-1. Amarillo regained the lead three minutes later when Drew Jeffers potted his fourth goal of the season and second as a Wrangler to give Amarillo a 2-1 lead. Jack McDonald picked up the lone assist on the goal. Late in the second period, Lone Star tied the game again with another power play goal. Jacob MacDonald scored from Murakami and Zadvernyuk with 1:20 remaining in the second frame to tie it up 2-2.

The third period featured no scoring and no penalties. And so, the game went to 3 on 3 overtime. Shots were 24-17 in favor of Lone Star after regulation.

The Wranglers had some good chances in overtime but couldn’t seem to find any puck luck, as Lone Star ended the game on a tip-in goal from Jacob MacDonald to settle the score at 3-2.

The Wranglers will look to bounce back tomorrow night on Teddy Bear Toss Night, where teddy bears will be thrown on the ice following the first Wranglers goal.
