Wranglers Weekend Recap: Home Opening Weekend Sweep of the Rhinos

The Amarillo Wranglers started off their home schedule with a weekend sweep of the El Paso Rhinos winning Friday night 4-to-3 and Saturday night 5-to-1.

In Friday night’s contest, the Wranglers got two goals from Defenseman Bryson Russell. Nikolas Campbell and Kristaps Skrastins also picked up goals. Wranglers goalie Max Gutjahr made 28 saves to get his second win of the season.

Saturday night started with much more physical play and the first real fight of the season for Amarillo when Bryson Russel and Ian Carpenter dropped the gloves in the opening frame. Nikolas Campbell got the scoring started in the first frame.

Amarillo would show the offensive fireworks with 3 goals in 4 minutes. Tommy Chunchukov, Glebs Prohorenkovs, and Caden Carlson found the back of the net early in the second period. 

Prohorenkovs tallied his second goal later on in the period to give the Wranglers a 5-to-0 lead. 

Max Gutjahr finished Saturday night with a 36 save effort to secure the 5-1 Saturday final and the weekend sweep of the Rhinos. 

Amarillo has an early season 4 point advantage at the top of the South division with a 5 and 1 record. Special teams have played a big role for Amarillo with 10 PPG and an even 50.0 conversion on the man advantage through the first 6 games. 

Notable performances from the first weekend at home include: 

Max Gutjahr tallied 64 saves in the two victories and now has a 3-and -1 record. 

Kristaps Skrastins who had one goal and four assists in the two games

Glebs Prohorenkovs had two goals Saturday night and an assist Friday night. 

And Nikolas Campbell who had a goal in each of the games versus the Rhinos this weekend. 

The Wranglers will take on the Wichita Falls Warriors from Kay Yager Colosseum Friday and Saturday. The Warriors split the previous weekend series with the Odessa Jackalopes.
